Let's clear a few things up
It broke while I was locking up and now the door is open. What should I do?
Stay with the door if you can, or ask a neighbour to keep an eye on it, and call. When the locksmith arrives the fragment is removed and securing the door comes ahead of everything else, so you can leave. If the cylinder needs more than a clean, a replacement goes on during that visit rather than leaving the door on a latch overnight.
Which finishes stand up to salt and winter?
Finish is one of the three categories on the residential hardware label, and it covers exposure to sun, humidity, salt and skin oils. In practice, PVD brass, satin nickel and stainless finishes tolerate a salted driveway well, powder-coated black holds up when it is not chipped, and traditional lacquered brass tends to bloom green where salt reaches it. A storm door or a small overhang helps any finish, and wiping salt off in a thaw helps more.
Why does the deadbolt scrape or need a shove to throw?
Two causes cover most cases. Either paint has built up on the faceplate, the bolt or the strike so the bolt drags across it, or the door has dropped so the bolt is entering the strike pocket at an angle and rubbing its edge. Occasionally a bent deadbolt lever inside the case adds friction. Cleaning the paint back, adjusting the strike and checking the lever all happen as part of the service.
Does the lock still work if the internet goes down?
Yes for the things that matter at the door. Codes, fobs, fingerprints and the key talk to the lock directly, and schedules stored in the lock carry on, so you get in and out normally through a router reboot or an outage. What pauses is remote control from far away and the alerts, which return when the connection does.
