Reading about locks is not most people's idea of a good evening, so we have kept these pieces short. Each one answers a single question clearly, from how to keep a lock working through a cold snap to what to think about before adding a keypad at the office.

Should I try to get in myself before calling?
By all means check the easy things: another door, a family member with a spare, a neighbour holding a key. Beyond that, it pays to wait. Credit cards bend latches, screwdrivers scar cylinders, and a forced window costs far more than a lockout visit and leaves the house less secure. A locksmith arrives with tools shaped for the exact hardware on your door, and an undisturbed lock is the easiest kind to open cleanly. Home Lockout Service
Can you also deal with the back door, the roll-up shutter and the gate?
Yes. A business lockout covers every opening the premises relies on: the rear service door with its exit device, a roll-up shutter and its padlock, the compound gate, a mailbox in the lobby and interior doors such as the cash office or server closet. Mention each one when you call so the right padlock shackles, cores and cylinders are in the van, and so cylinders that should share a key are handled together. Business Lockout Service
It broke while I was locking up and now the door is open. What should I do?
Stay with the door if you can, or ask a neighbour to keep an eye on it, and call. When the locksmith arrives the fragment is removed and securing the door comes ahead of everything else, so you can leave. If the cylinder needs more than a clean, a replacement goes on during that visit rather than leaving the door on a latch overnight. Broken Key Extraction
Will my door be boarded up, or can it be made to lock tonight?
Most forced doors lock again during the visit. If the slab and frame are sound, a new lockset goes in and the strike is reinforced. If the jamb is split, a repair plate or a boxed strike screwed into the stud usually holds it. Boarding is reserved for openings where the frame or the door itself is destroyed, and even then it is fitted so the household can get out from inside without a key. Break-In Damage Lock Repair

Change or Rekey Locks
Do the old keys really stop working?
Yes, at every cylinder that was rekeyed. Once the bottom pins are changed, a key cut to the old combination lifts them to the wrong heights and the plug will not turn. The locksmith proves this at each door by trying the old key after the new one, because any door missed from the list would still answer to the old key. That is also why the walk around the property at the start matters: every door meant to be included has to be on the list. Lock Rekeying
I rent. Can I have a deadbolt installed on my unit door?
You can, with a conversation first. Tenancy rules in this province expect a tenant to have the landlord's consent before changing locks and expect the landlord to hold a key, so ask in writing and share the plan. Many landlords welcome a proper bolt. The locksmith can key the new cylinder to the building's existing key where the keyway allows, and leave a note of the model and keys cut for the building manager. Deadbolt Installation
Which finishes stand up to salt and winter?
Finish is one of the three categories on the residential hardware label, and it covers exposure to sun, humidity, salt and skin oils. In practice, PVD brass, satin nickel and stainless finishes tolerate a salted driveway well, powder-coated black holds up when it is not chipped, and traditional lacquered brass tends to bloom green where salt reaches it. A storm door or a small overhang helps any finish, and wiping salt off in a thaw helps more. Lock Replacement & Upgrade
Why does the deadbolt scrape or need a shove to throw?
Two causes cover most cases. Either paint has built up on the faceplate, the bolt or the strike so the bolt drags across it, or the door has dropped so the bolt is entering the strike pocket at an angle and rubbing its edge. Occasionally a bent deadbolt lever inside the case adds friction. Cleaning the paint back, adjusting the strike and checking the lever all happen as part of the service. Vintage Mortise Lock Service

How is a new combination actually chosen and set?
You choose the numbers yourself, within whatever range and spacing that lock's rules allow, rather than being handed a default sequence. On a mechanical lock the locksmith uses a manufacturer change key to reset the wheel pack to your chosen combination; on an electronic lock the new code is entered directly through the keypad or a connected programming tool. Either way it is tested several times, door open and then closed, before the visit is considered complete. Safe Opening & Combination Change
How often does the battery need replacing on an electronic lock?
Most electronic locks give a low-battery warning, usually a beep or flashing light, well before they actually stop working, and replacing the battery within that same week is the safer habit rather than waiting. Depending on how often the safe is opened, a battery commonly lasts somewhere between one and several years, and keeping a spare of the correct type near the safe avoids a search once the warning starts. Safe Installation & Servicing
What proof do I need to show before locks are changed?
The locksmith confirms that the person ordering the work is entitled to change the locks: the owner, a tenant with the landlord's agreement, or a property or facilities manager for a business. Photo identification and something linking you to the address usually settle it, and for a company a letter or a call to the named contact does the same. It protects you as much as anyone, since the same check stops someone else from changing your locks. High Security Locks

Commercial Locks
Can all our doors be put on a single key?
Yes, if the cylinders share a keyway or can be fitted with ones that do. Keying everything alike is popular with small shops because staff carry one key and spares are simple. The trade-off is that one key then opens the cash room as readily as the front door. Many businesses choose a middle path: the doors everyone uses on one key, the sensitive rooms on another, and an owner's master that opens both. Commercial Rekeying
Can different lock brands be mixed in one master key system?
Sometimes, but it depends on the keyway and pinning platform each brand uses; some are compatible with one another and some are not. Where a mix already exists on a property, the assessment identifies which cylinders can be brought into a single hierarchy and which need replacing with a matching platform so every level pins correctly across the whole set of doors. How is a lost fob or card handled?
It is switched off in the software the moment it is reported, which stops that specific card or fob from working at any door it used to open. A new one is issued and enrolled in its place. No lock has to be changed and no other credential in the building is affected, which is the main advantage a lost fob has over a lost mechanical key. Access Control Installation
What is the difference between a rim, mortise and vertical-rod device?
A rim device sits on the surface of the door and suits most single openings, including many tall and fire-rated doors on their own. A mortise device fits into a pocket cut in the door's edge and is chosen where a heavier case or a particular trim style is wanted. A vertical-rod device runs rods to the top, or top and bottom, of the frame, which suits an opening that specifically needs latching at more than one point rather than height by itself. Car Keys
Should I call a tow truck or a locksmith?
For keys locked in, lost or broken, a locksmith opens the car where it stands and can usually make a key on the spot, so the car drives away. A tow moves the car to a shop but leaves the key problem unsolved. Roadside clubs send a locksmith for lockouts and reserve towing for cars that cannot be made drivable. If the shoulder is unsafe to work on, a short tow first may be sensible. Car Lockout Service
Can you make a key if every key to the car is gone?
Often, yes, for vehicles with a supported conventional key system: the car is opened, a blade is produced by decoding the door lock or retrieving the factory key code, and the immobilizer is reset so the missing keys are erased before new ones are stored. A key-card or phone-key vehicle, or one needing a dealer procedure, follows its own route instead, which is why the VIN is asked for on the first call. Car Key Replacement
Can a spare be made from a key that is already worn?
Yes, and it is often a good reason to make one. Rather than tracing every rounded edge of a worn blade onto the new copy, the locksmith can decode the lock or cut to a valid factory code for the blade, then read or clone the chip data separately for the electronics, producing a spare that is cleaner than the original rather than a copy of its wear. The worn key can then be compared against the fresh one and retired if it is due for that. Spare Car Key Duplication
Can a cracked fob shell be fixed without replacing the whole fob?
Often, yes. A replacement shell built for the same internal electronics can be fitted around the working circuit board and buttons, so a fob that still functions but looks and feels worn out gets a new case rather than a full replacement. This only applies when the electronics inside are still sound; a board damaged by water or impact may need the fob itself replaced. Key Fob Programming
